Red oak rift quarter sawn wood flooring is a great alternative to white oak. It is also possible to find engineered quarter sawn flooring.
Quarter sawn red oak does exhibit some fleck or medullary ray effect although it is not nearly as pronounced as in white oak. However there is little agreement what exactly that angle is. This means red oak white oak maple walnut and black cherry wood are going to be your most common choices. The resulting lumber can also be called radially sawn or simply quartered.
